Mary Kay is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Mary Kay Ash founded “Beauty by Mary Kay” in Dallas 50 years ago, with $5,000 and a dream of enriching women’s lives.

In celebration of its anniversary year, Mary Kay held a Global Makeover Day on March 8th – and attempted to set a world record for the most number of makeovers in 24 hours. The numbers are still being tallied, but the count was up to 11,554 according to the company’s Twitter feed.

The company’s independent sales force, along with its global makeup artist team, took part in the makeover events that were simultaneously held all around the world. Three events took place in the U.S. in New York’s Times Square, The Grove in Los Angeles and The Mary Kay Building in Dallas.

Mary Kay’s Global Makeover Day kicked off its Global Makeover Contest.

Anyone receiving a makeover from one of Mary Kay’s beauty consultants, now through May 10th, can enter to win one of 50 $5,000 grants to a charity of their choice that supports women and children, plus a $5,000 international vacation to the destination of their choice. Participants must submit a “before and after” photo to enter the contest.
